Does pet insurance cover it?

Feline urinary disease is covered as illness at 70–90% after deductible — exams, diagnostics, medications, and any escalation to emergency care. The category's high claim frequency makes enrollment timing decisive: insure before the first documented episode. Prescription diets, the backbone of long-term management, typically require a wellness add-on.

Questions owners ask

How much does it cost to treat a cat UTI or urinary issue?

Based on 23 real cat invoices, urinary visits cost $275–$950. A standard visit — exam, urinalysis, medication — runs $150–$400. Visits that add a urine culture and imaging reach $400–$900, and a urinary blockage is a separate $1,500–$4,000 emergency bill (see our urinary blockage page).

What is on the bill for a cat urinary visit?

From real invoices: exam ($50–$100), urinalysis ($60–$140), cystocentesis sample collection ($15–$45), urine culture when it is added ($175–$335), pain medication ($20–$50), antibiotics ($25–$60), prazosin ($15–$35), and on some bills X-rays ($150–$400). Not every bill has every line — ask your vet for an itemized estimate.

Why does one cat urinary bill include a culture or antibiotics and another does not?

Bills differ by which tests and medications the vet adds. A urinalysis ($60–$140) is on most urinary bills; a urine culture ($175–$335) and antibiotics ($25–$60) show up on some bills and not others, and senior cats' bills more often add kidney blood work ($100–$250). Ask your veterinarian which tests and medications they recommend for your cat and what each line will cost.

How much does recurrent feline cystitis cost per year?

Recurrent FLUTD cats typically cost $500–$1,400/year: 2–3 flare-up visits ($150–$400 each), a prescription urinary diet ($50–$100/month for many), and occasional imaging ($150–$400). Some owners also add one-time home costs such as extra litter boxes or a water fountain ($50–$150).

When does a cat urinary issue become an expensive emergency?

A urethral blockage is a different bill entirely: $1,500–$4,000 for emergency catheterization and hospitalization, compared with $150–$400 for a standard urinary visit. Our cat urinary blockage page breaks down that emergency bill line by line. For any question about your own cat, call your veterinarian.

How much is a urinalysis for a cat?

In our data for cats, a urinalysis line usually runs about $60–$140, with in-house tests at the low end and send-out lab panels higher. A urine culture, when one is added, costs about $175–$335 in our data (mostly from vet estimates, and often billed together with the urinalysis as one line) — which is why two "urine test" bills can differ so much. Ask your clinic whether the quote includes the culture.

What is cystocentesis and how much does it cost?

Cystocentesis is a way of collecting the urine sample directly from the bladder with a needle. On cat bills in our data it usually appears as its own line of about $15–$45, sometimes with a small ultrasound-guidance charge. Ask your veterinarian how they plan to collect the sample and whether it is billed separately.

Does pet insurance cover cat urinary problems?

Yes — urinary conditions including FLUTD, infections, and blockages are covered as illness at 70–90% after deductible. Caveat one: urinary issues are among the most commonly claimed cat conditions, so insurers apply pre-existing exclusions strictly — one documented episode before enrollment can exclude the category. Caveat two: prescription urinary diets usually are not covered without a wellness add-on.
